The Pacific Orchid Exposition (POE) is hosted by the San Francisco Orchid Society, a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to foster the culture and cultivation of orchids and to promote orchid education to its members and to the public.

The show began in the 1950’s as part of the “Annual Banquet of the San Francisco Orchid Society,” typically held at a hotel or restaurant for society members rather than the public per se.  Members brought their finest specimen plants in bloom for a display that was judged by representatives from the Orchid Digest Corporation (ODC).

Decades later the show became open to the public and later included specialty nurseries with plants for sale.  The show was initially held in the “Hall of Flowers” in the County Fair Building in Golden Gate Park, and moved to Fort Mason until 2016, after which the event returned to the Hall of Flowers.
